What's New: New and Recent Additions

This section lists the dates that changes were made or new pages were added to the website. August 2010 was the last time webmaster Howard Hansen added a new page. He passed away in October 2010. Much has happened since then and hopefully someone else will fill in the missing pieces and carry the website forward. The information on this website serves as important background information about many of the new drugs in use for HRPCa. It also provides timeless information on facing the disease and dealing with side effects of treatment. (-Joan MacKenzie, Acting Webmaster, 6/26/12)

9/1/12. Some updates made to draft booklet Patient's Guide to Managing HRPCa

8/12/2010. A new page devoted to Provenge vaccine.

7/16/2010. Updated the "Proven treatments" web page and the "Other" page as well as the 2nd line HT page.

7/16/2010. Degarelix (Firmagon). Use instead of Lupron or other LhRH agonists for androgen deprivation therapy as well as a possible second line hormonal therapy.

6/24/2010. Cabazitaxel added to the list of available chemotherapy drugs. The approval information as well as the phase III results have now been added.

4/9/2010. Updated Avastin page with the results of phase III. Also many minor updates.

2/12/2010. Updates made to the abiraterone acetate page with recently (Feb 2010 J. Clin Onc) published phase I and II results. The novel taxoid drug, cabazitaxel, was added to the Potential Treatments Page. A further update to the taxotere update page was made to include Strum's 3 weekly vs weekly taxotere advice.

1/28/2010. The Vaccine page was updated. Patients' experience with Provenge were moved to separate pages - see clintrialsJB1, clintrialsJB2 and clintrialsSB.

1/21/2010. Updated survival page.

1/19/2010. Updates to taxol chemotherapy page and added a Q8/A8 to FAQ page.

1/16/2010. Updated the Ixempra page with the results of the phase I trial of mitoxantrone plus Ixempra - reference 5.1 on that page. There are several other minor updates with this upload.

12/3/09. General Update - no major changes. One new page lists the donors of memorial gifts to the Hormone Refractory Prostate cancer association, Inc.

10/10/2009. A new page has been added dealing with the dosing interval of Zometa as well as markers such as NTx, BAP. The effect on skeletal related events is also covered.

9/20/2009. Two new anecdotal reports added concerning taxotere.

9/14/2009. Updated the acronyms webpage and links. ASCO discontinued their PLWC website and replaced it with cancer.net.

8/26/09. Table 2 was updated with more information on the 2nd line chemotherapy using leukine, high dose ketoconazole, and mitoxantrone. The is on the mitoxantrone page.

8/23/09. A new page on high dose pulsed calcitriol (HDPC) combined with taxotere as a first line and 2nd line chemotherapy.

7/20/09. A new page linked off the clinical trials page with information on evaluating solid tumors via the RECIST 1.1 Criteria.

7/20/09. A new page about what patients should expect to pay when participating in clinical trials.

7/20/09. Updated ONJ page with some recent abstracts and a position paper. Also, a new page about end of life was added. There are links to hospice information also.

5/29/09. Numerous small updates. Taxotere/sutent (1st line combination) results from ASCO 2009 annual meeting updating preliminary information.

2/2/2009. A new page with information on Imclone's drug IMC-A12 and Medivation's MDV3100 along with George Kosaly's personal experience with these clinical trials. This page was updated to include the ASCO 2009 presentation on the phase I/II trial results.

1/27/2009. Updated the page on leukine and leukine combinations primarily covering the leukine plus HDK/HC study of CJ Ryan et al.

1/17/2009. Created a new page on nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy. This is linked off of the managing symptoms page.

1/16/2009. Updated Potential treatments page with information on a new drug in development called Apatone. Also, on the pain relief page, information on opioid induced constipation was added.

1/15/2009. A new page with a sunitinib table summarizing the results of the trials discussed in the sunitinib page which has been updated also.

1/9/2009. Added a new page, honoring HRPC patients who have passed away and were remembered with a memorial gift to the HRPCa Association, Inc. The list is for 2008 only.

1/05/2009. Added a link to Gerald Chodak's prostate videos website to the Information Resources page. Also have added a link to a mind-body interaction website that some may find interesting.

12-31-2008. Updated links and added information on pathology of PCa to diagnostics. Added degarelix, a new LHRH antagonist for testosterone suppression to second line HT page.

12-12-2008. Survival. A paper on survival of HRPC patients has been added. It is linked off the FAQ page.

12-8-2008. Ketoconazole Summary Table -- PSA responses rates and a whole lot more summarized in one table. Covers HDK+, HDK, LDK and IDK.

11/29/08. Revlimid (lenalidomide) page updated with a new table (#4) with the results of Revlimid plus ketoconazole.

11/27/08. Nilutamide (Nilandron). An antiandrogen that can be of use as a 2nd line hormone therapy after withdrawal from Casodex or Eulexin.

11/27/08. Sunitinib (Sutent). An available drug being studied in HRPC patients.

11/8/08. Ixempra(Ixabepilone) page was updated with results of a phase I trial of Ixempra and Mitoxantrone.

8/13/08. Avastin with taxotere. Results of phase II trials, info on phase III and the combination of Avastin, thalidomide and taxotere.

8/6/08. Donations. A page has been added on where to send donations (checks only).

8/6/08. Abiraterone analysis added to "Potential treatments list"

5/4/08. A pdf of taxotere side effects added.

4/28/08. A new page containing clinical trial results for cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan®). Another possible chemotherapy for use after failing 1st line chemotherapy.

4/13/08. A new page on low-dose glucocorticoids(hydrocortisone, prednisone, dexamethasone and triamcinolone) has been added. It is linked off the 2nd line hormone therapy page.

4/13/08. A new page on triamcinolone has been added.

4/4/08. The page on mitoxantrone was updated with a paper on mitoxantrone + ketoconazole + gm-csf(leukine) in table 2.

2/25/08. The page on aminoglutethimide was updated with information from a paper by Kruit WJ et al, 2004 which shows good results based on PSA.

2/16/2008. A new page on gemcitabine (Gemzar) has been written. Studies that have some impact on HRPC disease are discussed and summarized in tables.

2/12/2008. A new page on vinorelbine(Navelbine) was added.

12/18/2007. A new page on Revlimid (lenalidomide) has been added. It has recent data on its use with leukine and taxotere as well as toxicity data from phase I trials.

11/7/2007. The page on ONJ was updated.

10/19/2007. A paper on using Valproic Acid (Depakote ER) for HRPC has been added. This use must still be proven, but the drug is already available.

10/1/07. Information on ONJ was put onto its own page.

8/1/07. A Presentation on A Personal Experience with Clinical Trials by Ian Liston has been added to the Clinical Trials Resources Page.

7/29/07. The chemotherapy-other (than taxanes) page has been updated. A number of studies using cyclophosphamide were added plus others from ASCO 2007.

7/26/07. Fatigue pages updated (use of ginseng, modafinal).

7/04/07. A new page on Satraplatin was added. This primarily covers the phase III SPARC clinical trial results. Also the outcome of the ODAC meeting on 7/24/07 was added to this page (complete the full survival analysis 1st.)

6/25/07. A new page reviewing HRPC clinical trials for Ixabepilone was added. This is linked off the Potential Treatments page which has also been revised.

6/24/07. A page with anecdotal reports from patients dealing with nail/skin toxicity was added. Also added is a page containing reports from patients on their experiences with chemo ports.

6/21/07. The page on glutamine for prevention of peripheral neuropathy has been updated. A new page containing all the information on nail/skin and peripheral neuropathy toxicities was created.

3/27/07. A new page on adding dutasteride after "failing" ketoconazole delaying progression was added linked off the "Other" page.

3/18/07. A new page was created covering proven treatments - other linked from the proven treatments page.

3/17/07. The current information on Satraplatin was added to the Potential Treatments page.

3/7/07. An over-counter-medicine, Noscapine, was added to the Potential treatments page.

2/17/07. Updated the lymphedema page and also added a link to a PDF version of the paper, "Lymphedema" by P. O'Brien, M.D. (1.3MB).

2/14/07. Added a page on the Bone Scan with an example which adds to the information on the diagnostics page.

2/13/07. Updated Bisphosphonates with information/links on ONJ and also some clarification on half-life of Zometa.

2/10/07. Updated information resources page with nutrition and cancer links.

2/8/07. Updated Fatigue with new L-Carnitine Results.

1/24/07. A new paper on mitoxantrone as a 2nd-line chemotherapy was added. Is Mitoxantrone a Viable 2nd-line chemotherapy for hrpc? And What Might be Added to improve its response rate? by H.Hansen.

1/12/07. Added another reference to FAQ.htm -- A6 on PSA flare phenomenon on taxotere.

1/5/07. A new paper on Xeloda(capecitabine) either by itself or in combination with taxotere (author: Howard Hansen).

4/16/06. Updated Exisulind page.

4/10/2006. A new page, Taxol Combinations Including Taxol and High Dose Calcitriol was added. This incorporates what is known about taxol plus high dose calcitriol.

3/19/2005. A new page, chemotherapy updates, containing links to the 2004 Chemotherapy Update and links to 4 new pages with the update tables beginning with 2005. The new tables cover taxotere, taxol, studies that had prior chemotherapy and an other category.

1/23/06 Chapter 15, Managing Chemotherapy Side Effects has been added to the booklet.

1/19/06 An article on Phenoxodiol was added to the list of potential treatments.

12/30/05 A list of patient travel resources was added to the "Information Resources" page.

10/20/05. An article on Abraxane^TM , albumin nanoparticle paclitaxel (Taxol) added to the chemotherapy home age.

9/17/05 The page on Leukine was updated to include the combination of leukine and ketoconazole.

9/17/05 A new page on somatostatin analogs has been added (octreotide, lanreotide with dexamethasone or estrogens).

8/4/05 Chapter 14 on chemotherapy has been added to the booklet.

7/28/05 Chapter 12 added to the booklet.

6/10/05 A new page dealing with mouth sores (mucositis) has been added. This is based on various patient's inputs.

5/18/05 Jack Beaven's continues his updates of what has happened since his Provenge vaccine trial participation in Since Provenge Part II.

5/14/05 A new handbook for hrpca patients (A Handbook: Living With Advanced Prostate Cancer), can be ordered through the Prostate-Cancer Research Institute(PCRI.) They have a web page with information on how to obtain the handbook from them.

2/5/2005 A new page on chemotherapy -- an update of 2004 ASCO abstracts and 2004 papers as well as some earlier papers which are included as references. Update of Chemotherapy for 2004 - Part I. Taxanes and Mitoxantrone

12/12/04 A new page on Depression (Distress) was added that also contains a table of antidepressant drugs (Mood Elevators).

12/9/04 A search capability was added. Google is used and the search box is at the bottom of the 1st page. The primary website name is now hrpca.org and hormonerefractorypca.org is the secondary name.

11/3/04 Intermittent Chemotherapy -- Leukine, Retinoids and Thalidomide for Extending the Off Period. This paper discusses a possible way of reducing the side effects of chemotherapy. The drugs discussed might also be useful in the context of 2nd line hormone therapy.

11/2/04 FAQ updated with PSADT information.

7/24/04 Ketoconazole page updated with side effects and using ketoconazole with chemotherapy.

7/6/04 Aptosyn - page updated to reflect purchase by OSI Pharmaceuticals.

7/1/04 After Provenge. An account of a patients status following a phase III Provenge clinical trial.

7/1/04 A single patient case study comparing Modafinil and Methylphenidate for combating chemotherapy induced fatigue.

4/13/04 Acronyms page added. This lists acronyms unique to this website and links to other web resources for glossary information and acronyms definitions.

2/19/04 An article on Lymphedema has been added.

2/19/04 Updates were made to FAQ(FAQ#2 added), Chemotherapy and Symptoms Management pages. Also minor updates made in other pages.

2/6/04 Aishman's writeup of glutamine for peripheral neuropathy was moved from the chemotherapy page to a separate page. It is still also found in Aishman's part 2 paper.

1/28/04. Tables have been added to radiation therapy for hrpca patients that explain when to use radiopharmaceuticals and when not to.

1/26/04. An explanation of the complete blood count(CBC) was added.
